Earlier this year, Apple and Epic Games were involved in a controversy over the latter offering payments in the app that bypassed the App Store’s payment gateways. One of the reasons Epic Games offered the same was that Apple charged a 30% commission to facilitate these payments, and offering payments in the app allowed them to avoid paying the high tariffs. Now that Apple has reversed its charges, other apps are ready to stand on the edge. That way, Netflix users can now renew their subscriptions directly through the app when using their iPhones. In other words, you no longer need to open the website in a browser to do the same.
How does this help users?
Previously, Netflix users had to open the Netflix site in a browser to renew their subscriptions if they saw content on an iOS device. Now that Netflix offers payments in the app to renew the subscription, people can save lots of time and effort. Note that even with this change, you will not be able to find Netflix on the Apple TV app (from now on).
What made it particularly difficult for people was that Netflix did not have to explain how they could renew their subscription once it ran out. Users had to figure it all out on their own. The only thing Netflix could do was display a banner in the app and apologize for the inconvenience, as doing anything else would be contrary to Apple’s policies.
Apple had banned Fortnite from bypassing the App Store’s payment gateways, and that’s obviously the last thing Netflix wants. Apple users represent a fair share of the brand’s customer base, and alienating them in a world where a new OTT platform launches quite often would certainly be a bad move.
