The Australian premiere of the critically acclaimed musical inspired by the music of Bob Dylan debuts at the Sydney Festival

It’s a proven bet that a mainstage musical based on the music of a popular record artist will always guarantee pimples in the seats. And when that musical comes to Australia with critical acclaim and adoration of sold-out seasons on the West End and Broadway, you can be sure you’re in for a good hit. Enter Girl from Nordlandet, a charming stage show based on the songs of a living legend, the great singer-songwriter Bob Dylan.

Written and directed by multi-prize winner Conor McPherson, this production debuts at the newly opened Theater Royal for the Sydney Festival and packs an all-star cast of local theater darlings, including stage and screen icon and multi-Gold Logie winner Lisa McCune (King And I, South Pacific), Zahra Newman (Book of Mormon, Wentworth), Terence Crawford (Escape from Pretoria, 1984), Helen Dallimore (Evil [London], Legally blonde) and the Helpmann Award winner, the legendary Peter Carroll.

A History of American Life in 1934 Minnesota, Girl from Nordlandet centers on a community living on a knife edge in the local guesthouse: the owner, Nick, owes more money than he can ever pay back, his wife Elizabeth’s mind slowly deteriorates, and their daughter Marianne carries a child that no one will take with regard to. And when a preacher selling bibles and a boxer looking for a comeback show up in the middle of the night, things start to spiral beyond the point of no return.

Audiences will hear Bob Dylan’s songs recreated like you’ve never heard them before, inclusive Hurricane, I want you, Slow train coming, Lay Lady Lay and Like a pebble.

Girl from Nordlandet plays at the Theater Royal from 5 January. Tickets range from $ 49.90- $ 185 and you can get yours here.
