Each year, the Austin Police Department releases a list of local bars where the highest number of DWI suspects said they had their last drink.
Topping the list for 2010 is J. Black's Feel Good Lounge, followed directly by three other bars located on West Sixth.
Cmdr. Jason Dusterhoft with APD said the close proximity of the top four bars is a concern for the department.
“Well anytime when you see a little bit of smoke, there might be some fire. So we need to investigate,” he said.
Officers will alert management at the bars on the list, and allow them time to see if there is an internal issue.
"We'll send them a letter, notifying them of that. They may not know they had several DWIs leave their location, so we want to make sure we're educating them,” he said.
Dusterhoft said the list is an effective way to pinpoint concentrated areas where there is heavy drinking.
"We want to make sure we get the biggest bang for the buck. So we're going to go out there and say, ‘Where's our biggest problems? Where can we put the biggest resources to make the biggest impact?'" he said.
While Dusterhoft said the list is important, he urges Austin residents to keep the numbers in perspective. He said every year there are over 6,000 DWI arrests in Austin.
Only 29 of those said they had their first drink at J. Black's. Check out the full list of bars below.
