Austin Police Departments No Refusal Weekend

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin Police say they arrested 15 people during New Years Eve night under suspicions of driving while intoxicated.

Of the 15 arrested under suspicion of DWI 10 were served with blood search warrants and 3 had mandatory blood draws. Police told KXAN two remaining individuals gave their consent to either a blood draw or breathalyzer test.

The arrests were part of the Austin Police Departments No Refusal Weekend during the New Years Holiday.

In September Austin Police arrested 32 people Labor Day weekend during no refusal enforcement.

The DWI enforcement team is designed to cut down on the number of drunk drivers in Austin. Two teams of seven officers patrol from 7:30 pm. to 5:30 am., police can automatically get a search warrant to draw a drivers blood if they suspect you've been drinking and driving, even if you refuse a breath test.

The DWI team is now staffing the B.A.T bus parked at Riverside and South Congress, which was once staffed by civilians. The B.A.T bus is a mobile processing center where DWI suspects are taken for a breathalyzer test if they consent. From there, they are transported to jail.
