A former Japanese mechanic has won a mesothelioma lawsuit after a Tokyo court ruled that Honda must pay him 54 million yen after he developed the asbestos-related lung disease while working at a Honda facility in the 1960s. Hidenari Hane said that he was regularly exposed to asbestos at work from April 1968 to December 1969. The gap between the exposure and Hane’s claims fit with the average time when mesothelioma develops — 20 to 50 years. Explaining his ruling on the mesothelioma lawsuit and the culpability of Honda, Judge Koichiro Matsumoto said, “The risks of being exposed to asbestos had been known by the time the pneumoconiosis law was enacted in 1960 at the latest, and a major company like Honda should have ben fully aware of the risks and the damages at the factory were foreseeable.” Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that destroys lung, heart, and abdominal tissue. It is caused by the inhalation of asbestos particles. Mesothelioma is usually detected at a late stage and the patient typically can be expected to live for only a few months after diagnosis even after radiation and chemotherapy treatment. The mesothelioma lawsuit said that companies like Honda have the responsibility to prevent the exposure of workers to asbestos and to require them to wear masks when handling asbestos-related materials.
