According to new estimates published by the peer-review journal Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP), for every four to five reported cases of mesothelioma worldwide, at least one case goes unreported. This new study is the first to provide a global estimate of possibly unreported mesothelioma cases based on the information gathered from countries with data on asbestos use and mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma typically develops decades after a person’s initial exposure to asbestos. Accordingly, researchers in this study analyzed a country’s cumulative use of asbestos in prior decades and found that this information clearly and reliably predicted the number of recent mesothelioma deaths.

Mesothelioma is caused almost exclusively by asbestos exposure and, unfortunately, this cancer is difficult to diagnose until it is very advanced. Not only that, but medical bills for doctor’s visits and treatments can skyrocket, and mesothelioma patients typically cannot work because of their cancer. One way to help alleviate these costs for patients and their families is to file a mesothelioma lawsuit for possible compensation from manufacturers of asbestos products.

Baron & Budd has been fighting to protect the rights of mesothelioma patients for more than 30 years and has succeeded in numerous cases, some of which with multi-million dollar payouts to clients. The firm even went all the way to the Supreme Court to preserve the rights of mesothelioma patients to file independent lawsuits rather than simply accepting monies from a class action fund.
